Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh returns to Sanaa

Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh has returned to the country from Saudi Arabia three months after surviving an assassination attempt, officials say.

Yemen TV said President Saleh arrived in the capital, Sanaa, by private plane at dawn. No other details were given.

He went to Saudi Arabia in June for treatment following a rocket attack on the grounds of the presidential palace.

President Saleh, who has been in power for more than 30 years, has faced months of protests urging him to quit.

Correspondents say his return raises the risk of all-out civil war.

"We're definitely going to have an escalation of violence, but let him come back - we want him to come back and be tried for his crimes," said protest organiser Mohammed al-Asl.

Activists have been camped out in Sanaa's Change Square since January demanding an end to his rule.

Clashes in the capital between government troops and forces opposing the president have recently intensified.

More than 80 people, mostly unarmed protesters, have been killed since Sunday.

Medics say at least one person was killed overnight and many others wounded when mortars landed in Change Square.

On Friday, correspondents in Sanaa reported a surge in artillery and machine-gun fire.

Hopes of a lasting ceasefire between the sides, to enable a reform process to take place in which President Saleh would yield power, are fading.

On Tuesday the government agreed a truce following negotiations with Western envoys. However, the ceasefire broke down hours later.

Driving from the French region of Languedoc to Spain’s Catalonia, you cover more than just miles. Dropping down into the town of Collioure from the heights that separate it from the city of Perpignan and the rocky, inland foothills of the Pyrenees, it is apparent what made it so attractive to a painter like Henri Matisse. Splashes of colour are everywhere among the pink buildings, including the garish get-ups of tourists who were probably not in evidence in Matisse’s day. But it is the blue Mediterranean that dominates the town, and its soft edges begin to frame themselves into a painting before your very eyes.

The Côte Vermeille is the stretch of wild French coast that leads to French Catalonia and Spain, and where the Fauvists (translation: wild beasts), led by Matisse, sprung into vivid life for a brief time between Post-Impressionism and the avant-garde art movements of the 20th Century. Beginning in 1905, Matisse and his family spent summers in Collioure. He took colour to a new level, using it to create form and line with exaggerated, bold brushstrokes. Some of Matisse’s famous paintings of the period, such as The Open Window and The Roofs of Collioure use vivid colour to express the heat and movement he saw. Other painters like Pablo Picasso and Andre Derain followed him to Collioure, and the town’s Museum of Modern Art houses a small permanent collection that includes a Picasso and other Fauvist works. Another way to appreciate their work is on the Le Chemin du Fauvisme, a path through and above the town where 20 replicas of Matisse and Derain are placed in the same spots the artists painted them. Your first stop should be on the lively harbour where the two town beaches, bracketed between the Templar fortress and the Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, provide a view of the hillside town and the boats at sea.

The road out of town winds around the rocky coastline. Hairpin turns snake like isobars on a geologic survey through terraced vineyards that produce the local vintages, like the sweet dessert wine, Banyuls.

The descent into Banyuls-sur-Mer is welcome, with its square harbour front and lively beach. Banyuls is home to the Musee Maillol, where the works of sculptor Aristide Maillol, a contemporary of Paul Gauguin, are on display along with those of Marcel Duchamp and Picasso. If you have had enough art for the moment, the area’s Marine Reserve means the underwater flora and fauna here is a snorkeler’s paradise, crystal clear (as it is all the way along the rocky coast to Cadaques). The Aquarium de Banyuls/Mer showcases the diverse sea life in the Mediterranean.

The last town before the Spanish border, Cerbere, feels more Catalonian and less French, with a smaller quai-side than Banyuls and a boat-clogged harbour framed by the Pyrenees. You might be tempted to stretch your legs here, but hold out for the next stop: Port Bou, Spain.

The road reaches its highest point as it goes past the abandoned border crossing into Spain, and you descend again into a small Mediterranean town. This time it is Port Bou, where the pink terracotta buildings have been replaced by gleaming white ones. Stop for a late lunch or pick-me-up and perhaps a dip in the sea. There are two sand beaches, one directly on the town frontage and the other, a little cove tucked under a towering cliff, reached by a narrow path.

Polish off some tapas of croquettes and chorizo, and a reviving sangria (for the passenger, of course) before heading back on the road. The route heads inland to dry and hot Llanca before reaching the turn-off for Cadaques, where the Pyrenees meet the sea. Cadaques is a good half hour or more carsick-inducing drive over the high hills of Cap de Creus national park with lay-bys for taking photos or calm nervous stomachs. Heights reach above 600 meters, and in fact, there is an observatory atop the neighbouring Es Peni mountiain.

Once you descend into Cadaques, a town that drew Pablo Picasso (The Port at Cadaques, 1910), and Surrealist artists like Jean Miro and Marcel Duchamp, it is only a few more kilometres to Portlligat and the wondrous, white Salvador Dali House Museum (reservations are required). The house is one of the Dali triad that includes the Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres and the Gala Dali Castle-House Museum in Pubol, but Portlligat is where the famous Surrealist lived from 1930 to 1982 and where he created works like The Madonna of Portlligat. When his wife Gala died in 1982, he moved to Pubol and never returned.

Nasa's Kepler telescope finds planet orbiting two suns

Named Kepler-16b, it is thought to be an uninhabitable cold gas giant, like Saturn.

The newly detected body lies some 200 light years from Earth.

Though there have been hints in the past that planets circling double stars might exist - "circumbinary planets", as they are known - scientists say this is the first confirmation.

It means when the day ends on Kepler-16b, there is a double sunset, they say.
'Stunning'

Kepler-16b's two suns are smaller than ours - at 69% and 20% of the mass of our Sun - making the surface temperature an estimated -100 to -150F (-73 to -101C).

The planet orbits its two suns every 229 days at a distance of 65m miles (104m km) - about the same distance out as Venus.

"The real exciting thing is there's a planet sitting out there orbiting around these two stars."

Kepler finds stars whose light is regularly dimmed when an orbiting planet passes between the star and the telescope.

In this case, the team was also able to observe dimming when one star passed in front of the other.

Nasa's scientists saw additional dips in the light in both stars at alternating but regular times, confirming the dual orbit of the planet.

Data collected by the Kepler telescope allows for very precise measurements of the mass, radius and trajectories of all three bodies - the best ever estimates of a extra-solar planet.

New British Army chief pledges Afghanistan focus

Richards takes over as chief of the general staff from General Richard Dannatt following the bloodiest month for the British military since the 1980s Falklands War after July's loss of 22 troops in the Afghan conflict.

Public anger at the rising British military death toll in Afghanistan, which passed 200 this month, has put Prime Minister Gordon Brown under increased pressure to send more troops and equipment.

Richards has first-hand experience of the region as a former commander of the International Security and Assistance Force there.

Policeman injured as gunman opens fire near Waterloo station

A policeman was shot in the leg as he dived for cover when a fleeing gunman opened fire at him outside a busy London railway station.

The officer suffered a grazing wound to his leg caused by a bullet. Another officer was taken to hospital suffering from shock after the incident near Waterloo station in central London.

A manhunt was underway last night after the suspect escaped and members of the public were warned not to approach the gunman.

Eyewitnesses who had been having lunch in a restaurant described seeing the suspect run past them before turning and shooting twice at the officers.

They ducked for cover as one officer called: "Shots fired, shots fired."

Jill Cartwright, 35, a yoga teacher from Putney, south west London, was eating with four friends at the Thai Silk restaurant in Isabella Street when the man came past followed by two officers.

She said: "We saw the man run past followed by two policemen and we were laughing at it, singing the theme to The Bill.

"He didn't even look to be running very fast, but then he turned around and he fired.

"He was running as he turned and shot.

"It didn't sound like a real gun, it sounded something like a starter gun, but it shocked us."

Several streets were closed and office workers were told to remain indoors and stay away from windows as police began to hunt for the man.

Acting Chief Inspector Malcolm Noone said: "At about 3pm officers from Kennington police station stopped to speak to a male on a pedal cycle on Coin Street, Southwark.

"As the officers approached this male, he dumped the pedal cycle and ran off into Blackfriars Street.

"As the officers ran into Blackfriars Street they were fired upon and the man ran off."

He said two officers had been taken to hospital, one with suspected minor injuries, which may have been a result of his diving out of the way of the shots.

Mr Noone added: "There is an ongoing investigation into the full circumstances and to locate this individual."

Witnesses described the suspect as a white man with sandy-coloured, cropped hair. He was about 5ft 7in, wearing an open-fronted, grey hoodie, with pale-blue jeans.

I’ve had a few days during the HMX build while I’m either waiting for parts or waiting for something to dry and had some free time. I’m not exactly one to sit and watch TV when I have nothing planned, so I set out on another project.

While I have electricity out to the garage now, heat has been an issue all winter long. Mattar graciously lent me his kerosene heater, which did an okay job of taking the bite off the chill. Insulating the garage would go a long way to help keep the bitter Vermont cold out, but that’s a project for another day. I decided instead to take advantage of the south-facing side of the garage and build a solar furnace to collect some of that sunshine just bouncing straight off my garage. My dad built one years ago and said he recorded a 110-degree temperature differential between inlet and outlet. And I had enough scrap materials around the basement to do something similar to what my dad built.

I started with some 2×4s and plywood to build a simple box. I’m no carpenter, but I learned that if it’s wobbly, just add more nails.

I actually built the box to certain dimensions, based on what scrap materials I had and on the dimensions of my heat collection method – aluminum cans. That sure was a lot of Sprite. Fifty cans in five columns of 10 will funnel the air upward.

Sealed the box using adhesive caulk, just to keep any heated air from escaping the box.

So you may have already thought, “How can air climb the columns of cans when there’s no hole at the bottom of the can?” Answer: drill press and 3/4-inch bit. Times 45.

The last five cans, the bases of each column, will sit on the bottom of the box and thus will be unable to draw air from underneath, so I poked holes in the sides of each of the five.

Stack the cans with liberal doses of adhesive caulk. Give them enough time to dry.

Once they’re dry, I painted each column with black BBQ paint. Black to best absorb the sun’s heat, BBQ paint to keep from flaking off the cans. At the top, I drilled an outlet hole. I left an inch or two of space between the tops of the columns and the top of the box to permit air to flow out of the columns.

I drilled the outlet hole based on the diameter of some wet-dry vacuum hose I picked up, about 1-1/2 inches in diameter.

At the bottom, I used another wet-dry vacuum attachment that would more evenly disperse the incoming air. Screwed it in at each end, then caulked the seal.

Then started to caulk the columns in place. At the bottom, you can see the inlet hole I drilled. At about this point, I realized that a better place for the inlet would have been through the plywood at the bases of each column. In this location, the air can simply pass over the cans (there’s about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch between the cans and the upper edge of the 2×4 frame) and not really pick up that much heat. If I were to relocate the inlet, it would force all the air to pass through the cans and pick up the absorbed heat. Next time.

Had some red paint left over from one of Heather’s previous projects, so slapped on a couple coats to at least keep the weather off the bare wood.

The caulk is pretty strong. Kept the cans from falling out while I had the box inverted.

Also had some 3/4-inch PVC pipe from another previous project. Bought a couple elbows and T-fittings and whipped up a simple frame to keep the box off the ground and to angle it upward toward the sun. Didn’t give the exact angle too much thought.

Caulked a clear plexiglas cover on the front and sat the furnace out in the sun for a full day over the weekend to see how it would work.

Using some advanced technological equipment, such as this precisely calibrated pyrometer, I determined the intake air temperature, which should have been the same as the ambient air temperature, to be about 80 degrees.

Using the same equipment and methods, I determined the outlet temperature to be about 95 degrees – thus a 15 degree temperature differential. Not 110 degrees, but not bad , considering I didn’t even break $50 in materials – most of that being the plexiglas window.
Obviously don’t have the inlet and outlet attached to the garage – figures that the day I finish the furnace, it’s 80 degrees and sunny and it looks like we’re finally done with winter. Dad recommends wiring a pusher fan at the end of the inlet tube to keep the air circulating through the furnace.
Were I to do this again, I’d first make the furnace larger. As I recall, Dad’s measured something like four feet on each side. Obviously, the more surface area, the more heat you’ll pick up. Second, as mentioned above, I’d relocate the inlet to the back of the box to direct all the air through the cans. Or at least I’d cut a piece of aluminum to act as a baffle and prevent the air from rising straight up. Third, I might use those small soda cans I’ve seen in the grocery stores lately, just to get more surface area.
Fourth, I’d finish the build at the beginning of winter, not the end.

By the way, I’m no engineer and only have the vaguest understanding of thermodynamics. I know how old cars work, that’s about it. But common sense tells me to build this thing bigger, to insulate it, to add a fan and to snake the air sideways as a few of you have suggested. Gold on the diving boards of Rome was a reminder of that halcyon fortnight a year ago when daily news of Beijing plunder shone rapture into British households. It was also a taster of what might be in 2012 when London opens a five-ringed window on the world.

The knives are out, of course. Pulseless management consultants rattle off doom-laden projections drawn from financial models born of loveless MBAs. Britain is bust. The country can't afford it. Costs are out of control. The money London is burning would be better spent on housing, education and hospitals, blah, blah, blah.

To hell with your fatal abstractions. Sport, like art, is beyond computation, it cannot be rounded to the nearest decimal point. Neither can the benefits be measured by calculator. What happened in Beijing took everybody by surprise because we had forgotten how to celebrate life, how to reach for the moon.

What price the expression on the face of Nicole Cooke, who pedalled through the spray beneath the Great Wall of China to take Britain's first gold medal of the 2008 Games? Her outstretched arms framed the most uplifting sight a day can bring; a great, big, beautiful smile; teeth beaming like ivory bricks, lighting the road ahead.

Neither do the majority trade on anything but their talent. It is not about how they look but what they do. The Olympics is the ultimate meritocracy, rewarding substance not froth. Cooke's success was the more nourishing for her lack of glamour. She looked like the people we know and love not those enhanced lumps of blondeness rammed down our passive throats in magazines and on television.

Apart from the wholesome, regeneration through sport message cultivated so lustily by Lord Coe and his emissaries at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), there is also a political dimension readily understood by a former prime minister. Four years ago in Singapore Tony Blair twigged that London was not going head to head with Paris simply for the right to host a sporting knees-up for 16 days in 2012. This is also an opportunity to showcase brand Britain, to let loose some positive propaganda, to remind the world that this tired, old, liberal democracy is not such a bad place to be, that it still has many virtues and remains a substantial hub of cultural civility. It costs money to advertise. The Olympics is a billboard for Britain beamed across the world. And it starts now. That is why Coe is counting down the years so visibly today.

Sport is essentially a trivial business. It is also hugely symbolic. The Olympic Games distils.

Wireless power system shown off

A system that can deliver power to devices without the need for wires has been shown off at a hi-tech conference.

The technique exploits simple physics and can be used to charge a range of electronic devices over many metres.

Eric Giler, chief executive of US firm Witricity, showed mobile phones and televisions charging wirelessly at the TED Global conference in Oxford.

He said the system could replace the miles of expensive power cables and billions of disposable batteries.

"There is something like 40 billion disposable batteries built every year for power that, generally speaking, is used within a few inches or feet of where there is very inexpensive power," he said.

Trillions of dollars, he said, had also been invested building an infrastructure of wires "to get power from where it is created to where it is used."

"We love this stuff [electricity] so much," he said.

Mr Giler showed off a Google G1 phone and an Apple iPhone that could be charged using the system.

Witricity, he said, had managed to pack all the necessary components into the body of the G1 phone, but Apple had made that process slightly harder.

"They don't make it easy at Apple to get inside their phones so we put a little sleeve on the back," he said.

He also showed off a commercially available television using the system.

"Imagine you get one of these things and you want to hang it on the wall," he said. "Think about it, you don't want those ugly cords hanging down."

Good vibrations

The system is based on work by physicist Marin Soljacic at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

It exploits "resonance", whereby energy transfer is markedly more efficient when a certain frequency is applied.

When two objects have the same resonant frequency, they exchange energy strongly without having an effect on other, surrounding objects.

For example, it is resonance that can cause a wine glass to explode when a singer hits exactly the right tone.

But instead of using acoustic resonance, Witricity's approach exploits the resonance of low frequency electromagnetic waves.

The system uses two coils - one plugged into the mains and the other embedded or attached to the gadget.

Each coil is carefully engineered with the same resonant frequency. When the main coil is connected to an electricity supply, the magnetic field it produces is resonant with that of with the second coil, allowing "tails" of energy to flow between them.

As each "cycle" of energy arrives at the second coil, a voltage begins to build up that can be used to charge the gadget.

Mr Giler said the main coil could be embedded in the "ceiling, in the floor, or underneath your desktop".

Devices using the system would automatically begin to charge as soon as they were within range, he said.

"You'd never have to worry about plugging these things in again."

Safety concerns

Mr Giler was keen to stress the safety of the equipment during the demonstration.

"There's nothing going on - I'm OK," he said walking around a television running on wireless power.

The system is able to operate safely because the energy is largely transferred through magnetic fields.

"Humans and the vast majority of objects around us are non-magnetic in nature," Professor Soljacic, one of the inventors of the system, told BBC News during a visit to Witricity earlier this year.

It is able to do this by exploiting an effect that occurs in a region known as the "far field", the region seen at a distance of more than one wavelength from the device.

In this field, a transmitter would emit mixture of magnetic and potentially dangerous electric fields.

But, crucially, at a distance of less than one wavelength - the "near field" - it is almost entirely magnetic.

Hence, Witricity uses low frequency electromagnetic waves, whose waves are about 30m (100ft) long. Shorter wavelengths would not work.

'Ridiculous technology'

Witricity is not the first jump on the concept of wireless electricity.

For example, the nineteenth century American inventor Thomas Edison and physicist and engineer Nikola Tesla explored the concept.

"In the very early days of electricity before the electric grid was deployed [they] were very interested in developing a scheme to transmit electricity wirelessly over long distances," explained Professor Soljacic.

"They couldn't imagine dragging this vast infrastructure of metallic wires across every continent."

Tesla even went so far as to build a 29m-high aerial known as Wardenclyffe Tower in New York.

"It ran into some financial troubles and that work was never completed," said Professor Soljacic.

Today, chip-giant Intel has seized on a similar idea to Witricity's, whilst other companies work on highly directional mechanisms of energy transfer, such as lasers.

However, unlike Witricity's work, lasers require an uninterrupted line of sight, and are therefore not good for powering objects around the home.

In contrast, Mr Giler said Witricity's approach could be used for a range of applications from laptops and phones to implanted medical devices and electric cars.

"Imagine driving in the garage and the car charges itself," he said.

He even said he had had interest from a company who proposed to use the system for an "electrically-heated dog bowl".

"You go from the sublime to the ridiculous," he said.

Ted Global is a conference dedicated to "ideas worth spreading". It runs from the 21 to 24 July in Oxford, UK.

E-Cigarettes Pose a Health Hazard, FDA Warns

Testing of electronic cigarettes, known as e-cigarettes, has shown that they contain cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins, including a compound used in antifreeze, U.S. health officials said Wednesday.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that contain cartridges filled with nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. "The device turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, into a vapor that is inhaled," according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

And these products could encourage smoking, the agency warned.

Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, FDA's principal deputy commissioner, said in a news conference Wednesday that "public health experts, including the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Cancer Society, have expressed concerns about the safety of these products and the risk that electronic cigarettes may increase nicotine addiction among young people and ultimately lead kids to try conventional cigarettes."

The FDA analyzed the ingredients in a small sample of cartridges from two brands of electronic cigarettes marketed by U.S. companies: NJOY, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Florida-based Smoking Everywhere, according to Benjamin Westenberger, deputy director of the pharmaceutical analysis division at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, part of the FDA.

Although e-cigarettes are sold in the United States, they are manufactured overseas, mostly in China.

In one sample, analyses detected diethylene glycol, an antifreeze component. In several other samples, analysts found carcinogens, including nitrosamines, Westenberger noted.

"All of these results indicate an overall lack of quality control," he said. "These results indicate that these e-cigarettes could have safety and quality concerns."

The American Lung Association said that it supports the FDA's concerns. "For too long, e-cigarette manufacturers have sold these nicotine delivery devices -- absent FDA review and approval," the association said in a statement Wednesday. "These findings indicate FDA is serious about enforcing the law to protect consumers from unapproved products."

The lung association statement said that the group "urges the FDA to act immediately to halt the sale and distribution of all e-cigarettes unless the products have been reviewed and approved for sale by the FDA."

In addition to the testing, the FDA said it has been examining and detaining shipments of e-cigarettes at the border. So far, 50 shipments have been seized, according to Michael Levy, division director of the Office of Compliance at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

But the battle over whether e-cigarettes are legal is just getting starting. The FDA contends that e-cigarettes are both a drug and a device, making them subject to U.S. government regulation under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. However, one of the companies that markets e-cigarettes, Smoking Everywhere, filed suit against the FDA in late April, claiming that the agency overstepped its authority by banning shipments and insisting that e-cigarettes go through the drug approval process, FDA officials said during the news conference.

A big concern of health experts is that e-cigarettes are marketed and sold to young people. The devices are available online and in shopping malls and could be a gateway to smoking actual cigarettes, they noted.

"It looks like a cigarette, and it's used like a cigarette," Dr. Jonathan Winickoff, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics' tobacco consortium, said during the news conference. "It's marketed as a cigarette, and thus has the potential to normalize and cue smoking behavior."

Winickoff noted that cartridges for e-cigarettes are available in flavors, including chocolate, mint and bubblegum. "Past experience suggests that these products may be particularly appealing to young people," he said.

"E-cigarettes might encourage children, preteens and young adults to take their first step toward smoking cigarettes," he said.

Representatives of NJOY released a statement Wednesday night defending the company's product.

"NJOY's products have been on the market since at least April 2007 with no reports of adverse health consequences," company CEO Jack Leadbeater said in a statement. "We do not market our products to children, and indeed take affirmative steps to ensure that our products are not sold to minors by requiring retailers to agree to where the product is placed and request verification of appropriate age as it pertains to each state law."

"NJOY has been tested by an independent third-party laboratory. This testing, as well as our consultation with medical experts, gives us confidence that our products are appropriate alternatives for traditional cigarettes for the committed smoker," Leadbeater continued. "We are therefore surprised the FDA's testing has resulted in the agency suggesting that our products represent a health risk on par with conventional cigarettes. We will provide more information on NJOY's testing and the results in the very near future."

Smoking Everywhere did not return phone calls seeking comment.

The Big Question: Is Britain going to be at the centre of the 'green car' revolution?

Because Nissan has said that production of electric car batteries will begin at its Sunderland plant, with the creation of 350 jobs. Some £200m will be invested over the next five years. Through the Regional Development Agency, millions more of taxpayers' money will be spent on all manner of green infrastructure projects to boost the North East as a "low-carbon economic area", including electricity charging points, a test track, an R&D facility linked to local universities, and a training centre for electric cars. It looks as if the British motor industry is just refusing to lie down and die.

Doesn't the UK make too many gas guzzlers?

Yes and no. Given that there will always be some demand for the sort of luxury cars and SUVs that Britain excels in, it is probably a good thing that so many of these Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and Land Rover products are made here, especially as they are less prey to low-cost competition from Korea, China and India. However, there are also strong environmental and short-term economic pressures that mean the current trend towards greener, more economical cars will also help secure the future of the British industry. This is why the latest developments are such good news...

So what else is happening?

Only last week Toyota said that it would produce a petrol/electric hybrid version of the Auris hatchback at its Derbyshire factory as part of a drive to persuade European motorists to switch from economical and increasingly clean diesels to more low-emission technology. Vauxhall, meanwhile, may yet win the contract to produce General Motors's new electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, a version of which has been previewed as the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera. Much, however, depends on GM Europe's new owners, the Russian-financed Magna consortium or the US-backed private equity group RHJ. However, the signs are promising. The Government has also given a £27m grant to Land Rover to help them produce a new hybrid SUV, codenamed LRX, which ought to help the Jaguar Land Rover group reduce its overall emissions and win over a new breed of ecologically-aware driver. Not to be left behind, Mini is also proudly showing off its Mini E, an electric version of the Oxford-built hatch that is being trialled in the US market. Finally, Lotus has helped develop the new Tesla electric sports car in America, a "proper" performance coupe that dispels some of the myths about electric cars. They have also unveiled an attractive "baby Lotus" electric hatch, though it remains only a "concept".

Is electric the future?

Probably. The definitive King Review on low-carbon cars last year makes a pretty strong case for the electric car as the most environmentally friendly form of personal transportation. But the technological barriers remain and, even in a decade or two, it is unlikely that the internal combustion engine will entirely disappear. In a few years, we will probably see a much more diverse range of different technologies in cars. Ferraris and Porsches will probably still run on old-fashioned petrol, but small city cars might well be predominantly electric. Family saloons could be hybrids, with executive cars potentially running as ultra-clean diesels.

The hydrogen fuel cell, which creates its own electricity "on board", might even make an appearance in larger SUVs and people carriers, though at the moment its fortunes seem to be waning. Honda's FCX Clarity, which uses this very advanced technology, seems set to go into production. Biofuels, pioneered by Saab, could also play a part if their unfortunate effects on the price of food can be resolved: so-called third generation, algae-based biofuels won't compete with food for arable land and ought to be very green indeed. In other words, a thousand automotive flowers may blossom.

What about emissions at the power station?

Even electricity generated by the dirtiest coal would arguably still be cleaner than the cleanest petrol models. That claim is still disputed by some, but what is clear is that electricity generated from renewables and, again arguably, nuclear power, is far more clean than anything the internal combustion engine can yet match, though the margins may not be quite as large as people think.

What's the snag with electric cars?

Range, practicality and power. A car like a G-Wiz, the most popular model at the moment, costs about £8,500, for which you could buy a much better, small electric- or diesel-powered runaround, such as a Citroen C1 or a Nissan Micra, both of which are safer, faster, roomier and nicer to drive. Even the best of the current crop of electric cars have severe limitations in day to day running.

The latest Smart electric vehicle, for example, will do 70mph and has a range of 70 miles, which sounds fine for commuting and most journeys. However, it won't do 70 miles at 70 mph. It only has a range of 70 miles if you drive it very slowly; if you max it out at 70mph, you'll see the battery flattened within 20 miles. The Chevrolet Volt/Vauxhall Ampera is promising, as it looks and drives more like a conventional vehicle – but again it only has a range of 40 miles. There is also the small matter of a shortage of recharging points.

There are very few outside London and, even in such electric hotspots as Westminster, relatively few concessions are made to the electric lobby. There is some free parking, but it is often only for a few hours – so not much chance of consumers using their parking bays to commute to work.
